A new summit was held in Washington in the United States. Donald Trump received Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House as well as several European leaders, such as Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, Keir Starmer or the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The goal: to evoke a possible peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
Towards a Putin-Zelensky meeting?
A meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents was acted on Monday. According to Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin are expected to meet soon, or even within two weeks. “We decided on a bilateral meeting then a trilateral and finally a multilateral where Europeans must be around the table”confirms to LCI Emmanuel Macron. The meeting place remains “To be determined”said Donald Trump.
Three days after his meeting in Alaska with Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump therefore plays the intermediaries between the Ukrainian and Russian presidents. Before the meeting, the manager also told Emmanuel Macron that he “Think that Vladimir Putin wants an agreement.”
In the midst of exchanges with Volodymyr Zelensky and the European leaders, the American head of state has overshadowed to exchange by phone, for around forty minutes, with Vladimir Putin. On his return, he indicated that his Russian counterpart was “Okay for Russia to accept security guarantees for Ukraine”he says, recalling that it is “One of the central points that we must take into account”.
Regarding a possible after-conflict, Donald Trump detailed that the “Security guarantees for Ukraine would be provided by the various European countries, in coordination with the United States”. The meeting in Washington seems to have satisfied Volodymyr Zelensky who praised a “Good result”. The latter, however, believes that “The best exchanges remain to come”.
If the negotiations were to fail, the French president called for “Increase sanctions” against Russia and thus “Having a posture that puts more pressure on the Russian part”.
