A blunt warning from Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine’s president has warned Europeans that a new war with Russia could arise on the continent. He sees the recent incursions of Russian drones and planes into NATO airspace as a warning sign.
“Putin will not wait to end his war in Ukraine. It will open another direction. Nobody knows where. This is what he wants,” declared Volodymyr Zelensky, who spoke in kyiv this Saturday, September 27, according to Le Figaro. The Ukrainian president considers that the Kremlin is seeking to test Europe’s capabilities to protect its skies, after the appearance of Russian drones in Poland and Romania, as well as the violation of Estonian airspace by Russian fighter planes.
Zelensky worried about the military capabilities of his allies
This week, unidentified drones have been spotted several times above civilian airports in Denmark. On Friday evening, other aircraft flew over a Danish military base, then on Saturday a Norwegian base. On Saturday, a swarm of drones also flew over northern Germany. Berlin responded by authorizing its armed forces to shoot down any aircraft penetrating its territory. For its part, the Kremlin denies any involvement in the incidents reported in recent days in Denmark, Poland, Romania and Estonia.
Volodymyr Zelensky also expressed concern about the ability of his allies to confront Russia. The Ukrainian president further announced that several representatives from European countries would visit Ukraine to attend practical training on how to repel Russian air attacks.
Russian ambassador to France warns of risk of war
This Thursday, September 25, the Russian ambassador to France threatened NATO with strong reprisals if the alliance were to shoot down a Russian plane. After several violations of European airspace by Russia, American President Donald Trump ruled that the countries of the Atlantic alliance must shoot down the offending Russian aircraft.
If this were to happen, “it would be war”said Alexeï Mechkov at the microphone of RTL. “You know, there are a lot of NATO planes that violate Russian airspace (…), it happens quite often and they are not shot down”continued the Russian ambassador to France.
