What is the “Five Eyes” alliance?

The “Five Eyes” correspond to the alliance between five intelligence services from five different countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. This alliance has no address, headquarters or staff, which is attached to it.

Each country is supposed to point its information collected in its privileged action zone: Australia monitors South and East Asia; New Zealand ditto, in addition to the Western Pacific; Canada takes care of Russia and China; The United Kingdom of Hong Kong, of the Near East and of course Europe; The United States encompassing China, Russia, Near East, Latin America, Caribbean and Africa.

What is the origin of “Five Eyes”?

The origin of this alliance dates back to the Second World War. According to an agreement signed in 1943, Washington and London already shared their information. The alliance between the two countries became official in 1946, under the name of United Kingdom – United States Communications Intelligence Agreement (UKUSA). Canada joined the Alliance in 1948.

The two countries of Oceania, Australia and New Zealand, joined in 1956. At the start of the Cold War, the “Five Eyes” were allied in order to monitor the Soviet Union and more broadly the advent of communism in the world. In the 1950s, other countries contributed to these information exchanges without it becoming automatic: Norway, Denmark and West Germany.

Remember for decades, this alliance and the content of the agreement were revealed on June 25, 2010 by the American and British governments. The text therefore provides for an exchange of information, their analysis, the acquisition of information, the practices, equipment and procedures of each intelligence service.

In 2013, the former NSA consultant Edward Snowden described this alliance as “A supranational intelligence agency that does not meet the laws of its own member countries”, revealing many documents that the “Five Eyes” intentionally spied on their citizens.

The “Five Eyes” continue to share their national security information, national security of the five countries. Its members describe it as the oldest intelligence alliance in the world. All say it is the most important partnership in their country.
