What is the “world march to Gaza”?

Originally, the idea of a citizen march towards Gaza emerged from a desire to federate several similar initiatives, bearing close names – Global March to Gaza, March to Gaza, world march towards Gaza … At the end of April, several humanitarian actors, who came in particular from Switzerland and Spain, decide to regroup around a common action.

They are quickly joined by activists from nearly 50 countries. Objective: converge at the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip to put pressure on Arab governments – notably Cairo – and attract media attention to the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave.

Who participates in this walk?

About 150 non -governmental organizations and some 4,000 activists are expected at the Rafah border on June 15, 2025, reports Le Figaro. Gathered since Thursday, June 12 in Cairo, they have to embark aboard a bus to reach Al-Arish, before walking around fifty kilometers on foot to the border post.

Once there, they plan to install a symbolic camp to demand the opening of the border and the delivery of humanitarian aid. Among their claims: “End the genocide”,, “Break the seat”,, “Denounce the war crimes of Tsahal” And “Call international proceedings against humanitarian violations”.

Why is Egypt to slow down?

The Egyptian government, led by Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, fears the diplomatic and security consequences of such a mobilization. Fearing an overflow on the outskirts of the Rafah border post-the only crossing point between Gaza and Egypt-the authorities prohibited the march from progressing beyond Cairo.

Several hundred activists have been blocked at the airport or returned to their country, the authorities officially invoking the need to preserve public order. Egypt, however, continues to reaffirm its attachment to the delivery of humanitarian aid and the lifting of the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip.

For its part, Israel to announce “Wait from Egyptian authorities that they prevent the arrival of jihadist demonstrators on the Israeli-Egyptian border and that they do not authorize them to engage in provocations or try to enter the Gaza Strip”.

Do other initiatives coexist?

In parallel, the caravan Soumoud (Resistance, in Arabic), made up of Tunisian, Algerian, Moroccan and Mauritanian activists, also tries to rally Gaza. Starting from Tunis, she crossed Libya accompanied by a hundred vehicles, warmly welcomed in Tripoli. But as the Egyptian border approaches, the convoy found itself blocked, for lack of authorization from Cairo. The organizers claim to refuse to turn around despite the pressures.

Another initiative: the boat Madleenchartered by the Freedom flotilla, attempted in early June to break the maritime blockade imposed in Gaza. On board, several politico-media figures, including Rima Hassan and Greta Thunberg, were also prevented from reaching the coastal strip.
