What is the Rising Lion operation?

During the night of June 13 to 14, 2025, Israel launched a series of major strikes against Iran, called “Rising Lion” (Lion Levant)). This offensive marks a turning point in the region, while negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program were about to resume.

According to the Israeli staff, nearly 200 fighter planes have been mobilized to strike more than a hundred targets, ranging from nuclear installations-notably the Natanz enrichment complex-to several military bases, between Tehran and Ispahan. Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu justified the operation by evoking the” emergency ” to prevent Iran from crossing “The point of no return” in his atomic bomb race.

Sabotages, cyber attacks and infiltrated agents

Behind the air attack also hides a carefully orchestrated clandestine component. According to several concordant sources, Mossad agents have carried out targeted sabotage operations in the previous days, deactivating radar systems and missile launch platforms. Cyberattacks against Iranian electrical networks would have temporarily paralyzed certain defenses.

This synergy between military strikes and infiltration on the ground gives “Rising Lion” the character of a hybrid offensive, made possible by months of discreet preparation and a intelligence network deeply established in enemy territory. General Hossein Salami, chief of the revolution guards, was killed, as was General Mohammad Bagheri, Iranian chief of staff. Nuclear program scientists are also among the victims.

An assumed strategy

The very name of the operation, “rising lion”, is borrowed from a passage from the book of numbers: “The people will get up like a lion …” An explicit reference, both symbolic and political, used by Netanyahu to assert the legitimacy of a defensive action in the face of a threat which he considers existential. “We led first successful strikes and, with the help of God, we will accomplish much more”he said, announcing an extended campaign.

Faced with this demonstration of force, the international community has remained cautious: the UN calls for “Greater restraint”, While Jordan has closed its airspace and Iran promises a “Severe and regrettable revenge”. Tehran has already sent many drones to retaliate against Israel, causing two dead at this stage and around thirty wounded according to the Hebrew authorities.
