What is a Qamis?

A Qamis is a traditional tunic carried by men in certain Arab and Muslim countries. It is a garment from Arab culture and attached to the Koranic religion. Derivative of the Latin word Camisia (shirt), Qamis is very widespread in the Levant countries, in the Middle East, in North Africa, but also in the Horn of Africa.

Traditionally made from cotton or linen, this long sleeve tunic falling above the ankles is often white or beige. There are also darker Qamis, black, gray, blue or khaki. This tunic, made to ensure comfort and modesty, is characterized by its loose cut and its length, which covers the knee. The Qamis is often worn with a saruel and a belt (called OBI).

Carried on a daily basis in some countries as in Saudi Arabia, in the United Arab Emirates or Pakistan, Qamis is also wooded during ceremonies and religious festivals, such as marriages. Men can also wear it during business meetings, as is widespread in the Gulf countries.

Even if Qamis is more from Arab culture than from Muslim religion as such, it is very often worn for religious reasons; Some men of Muslim confession wishing to claim their Islamity by sporting the Qamis. In the Hadîths, which collect the acts and words of the Prophet Muhammad, it is thus reported that “The habit that the Prophet loved the most is Qamis”. The Qamis knows several names depending on the country and the regions. Called Thwab or Dishdasha in the countries of the Gulf and Syria, Jalabiya in Egypt, Djellaba in Morocco, Gandoura in Algeria, Jebba in Libya and Tunisia, it is also found in West Africa under the name Boubou or in India and Pakistan under the term Salwar Kameez.
