Survey – prison overpopulation: the French mixed on the rental of prison places abroad

Faced with prison overcrowding in France, Emmanuel Macron plans to rent prison cells abroad. A measure inspired by other European countries, such as Belgium, Denmark and Norway, which have already sent prisoners to penitentiary establishments in third countries. This track, which the president mentioned during his large interview on TF1 Tuesday eveningthus reflects an emerging trend in Europe in the face of prison management difficulties.

According to a CSA survey carried out for CNews, Europe 1 and the Tangwall Campagin, 52 % of French people are favorable to the rental of places of detention outside the territory to cope with prison overcrowding. Conversely, there are 48 % to consider that it is a false good idea. Notices are mixed with the solution mentioned by Emmanuel Macron. The figures vary little depending on sex: 53 % of men and 50 % of women agree to rent prison places abroad.

Certain variations are also notable depending on the age of those questioned: 51 % of 50 years and over recommend the rental of cells abroad as a solution to prison overcrowding in France. This proportion rises to 66 % for those under 35 and climbs up to 71 % among 18-24 year olds. Low differences are also observed according to the socio-professional category: 54 % of CSP-, 53 % of CSP+ and 49 % of inactive people wish to rent prison spaces abroad.

Left-right cleavage

Unsurprisingly, the question mainly divides respondents according to their political orientation. Thus, the voters on the left seem to be shared on the question. 50 % of sympathizers of the Socialist Party, 39 % of those of Europe Ecology – the Greens and Only 25 % of those of rebellious France are favorable to the rental of places of detention abroad.

On the presidential party side, 75 % of voters consider that it is a possible solution. On the right, this idea divides all the same. Among the Republicans, this figure climbs to 63 %, and up to 68 % for supporters of the national rally.
