Lebanon: towards a complete disarmament of Hezbollah

It is a historical decision. The ministerial meeting, led by Lebanese head of state Joseph Aoun, set a calendar for the disarmament of Hezbollah and other armed groups for the country of the country of Cedar for the year 2025. Beirut undertakes to settle this thorny file and the problem of the monopoly of weapons as provided for in the 1989 Taëf agreements, which ended the civil war.

The Chairman of the Council, Nawaf Salam, has indeed declared that “The Lebanese army has been mandated to develop an action plan which should be presented to the Council of Ministers before August 31, so that, by the end of the year, weapons are exclusively detained by the State”.

Hezbollah’s response was not long in coming. A few hours after the end of the ministerial meeting, the secretary general of the Shiite movement, Naïm Qassem, delivered a speech in which he challenged the Lebanese government. “The ministerial declaration speaks of strengthening sovereignty, but is it by abandoning arms, according to the requirements of Israel, the United States and certain Arab countries, that we strengthen sovereignty? »» he rebellious. Hassan Nasrallah’s successor has criticized the Lebanese government “To follow the Israeli-American agenda”.

Conditional mediation

Indeed, Donald Trump’s emissary for the Syro-Lebanese issue, Tom Barrack, went several times to Beirut, urging the Lebanese authorities to do what is necessary to completely disarm Hezbollah. Besides, the American diplomat said that “The United States is ready to play the role of mediator with Israel, on one condition: that the Lebanese government explicitly declares that there can only be one army in Lebanon, and that it is committed to a hezbollah disarmament plan by the end of the year”stating that Washington would not send the Marines to perform this task.

The Shiite party is also subject to pressure from Israeli bombing in the south of the country which aim to destroy the remaining stocks of weapons, factories and warehouses. Since the entry into force of the ceasefire of November 27, 2024, the Israeli army continues to lead raids to the country of Cedar to prevent a overhaul of the Pro-Iranian organization. In addition, the Hebrew state occupies five strategic positions along the Lebanese border. Corporated militarily because of the war against the Hebrew state and the loss of its strategic depth with the change of regime in Syria, Hezbollah is forced to collect without reacting. During the night of August 6 to 7, the Aviation of Tsahal led about twenty strikes in the bordering areas.

Only Iran continues to give it distant diplomatic support. Previously a real regional military power, serving as a relay in Tehran in Yemen and Syria, the militia certainly knows its last hours.
