Five dead in an attack in East Jerusalem, Hamas welcomes the operation

Five people were killed and several others injured on Monday in a firearm attack in East Jerusalem, reports AFP. Magen David Adom, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, said that four men, aged about 30 to 50, were killed on the spot, and that a woman died later at Shaaré Tzedek hospital. Ten other people were injured, including seven seriously.

The attack took place at the entrance to the Ramot district, where the attackers opened fire on a bus station. Israeli police said two people had been involved and neutralized by a security guard and a civilian present on the spot.

An attack applauded by Hamas

Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu’s office announced that he was having a meeting with security services managers to take stock of the incident. Hamas praised the attack in a statement, saying that the attackers were Palestinians. “We affirm that this operation is a natural response to the crimes of the occupation and the genocide which it leads against our people”said the terrorist movement.

France has condemned the attack. Emmanuel Macron expressed his “More sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to all the Israeli people”while calling for the end of violence. “The spiral of violence must end. Only a political solution will allow the return of peace and stability for all in the region ”he added.

This is not the first time that East Jerusalem has been miolate after such an attack. For years, the sector has experienced regular clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces, and multiple attacks have been perpetrated there.
