Customs duties, All Saints’ Day, Enrico Macias… The 4 news stories you’ll hear about this weekend

New US customs duties on imported trucks will come into effect on November 1, 2025, Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social platform. These taxes of 25% on heavy goods vehicles and 10% on buses and their spare parts are justified by the White House in the name of the “national security”. The objective? Support American manufacturers such as Peterbilt, Freightliner, Kenworth or Mack Trucks.

The measure, detailed in a presidential proclamation of October 17, is part of a broader protectionist strategy initiated by the president, who had already announced customs duties on medicines, furniture and other manufactured products at the end of September. The main countries targeted are Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany and Finland, major partners of the American automotive sector. A limited allowance is provided for imported parts representing up to 15% of the value of a vehicle assembled in the United States.

This decision, however, raises legal questions, with the Supreme Court due to rule in early November on the legality of taxes imposed according to the geographical origin of products. These new customs duties also risk straining trade relations with Washington’s partners, particularly within the framework of agreements with Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

2 – Catholic solemnity of All Saints’ Day

This Saturday, November 1st, All Saints’ Day will be celebrated, a great Catholic solemnity honoring all saints, known or anonymous. Established in the 8th century by Pope Gregory III, this festival honors those who have dedicated their lives to God. In France, it has been a public holiday since Napoleon, and remains a joyous celebration marking the victory of life over death.

On this day, the faithful participate in All Saints’ Mass, pray to the saints and entrust their intentions to God. Many also take the opportunity to rediscover their patron saint or share a meal with family, perpetuating an ancient community tradition. On Sunday, November 2, the Church will then commemorate the faithful departed, on All Souls’ Day, established in the 10th century. Families then go to the cemeteries to place flowers on the graves, a symbol of hope and memory. In contrast, the Halloween festival, celebrated the day before, evokes a darker vision of death, far removed from the Christian message of All Saints’ Day, which celebrates above all light, holiness and the hope of eternal life.

3 – Official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum

After more than twenty years of work, Egypt will finally inaugurate the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) this Saturday, November 1. Located two kilometers from the Giza plateau, facing the pyramids, it is the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi will welcome heads of state and international leaders for the occasion, in a ceremony presented as a major historical and cultural event. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by Badr Abdel Ati, coordinated the diplomatic preparations, while the governorates of Cairo and Giza finalized the urban planning, signage and live broadcast of the ceremony on giant screens. November 1 was declared a national holiday to mark the event.

Postponed several times, notably in July 2025 due to regional tensions, the opening of the GEM symbolizes Egypt’s cultural and tourist renaissance. This project worth more than a billion dollars should attract up to 5 million visitors per year and revive a vital sector for the country’s economy. The museum will notably house the treasure of Tutankhamun, never before exhibited in its entirety. For the inhabitants and traders of Cairo, this inauguration brings immense hope: that of the lasting return of tourists to the cradle of Pharaonic civilization.
