European flags removed from town halls: Marion Maréchal defends a “civilizational reference”

Should European Union flags be removed from town halls run by the National Rally? If several councilors from the party led by Jordan Bardella have stood out by doing this, this is not the opinion of Marion Maréchal. In a message published on X this Monday, the Identity-Libertés MEP recognized a “symbolic (and legitimate) protest against the bureaucratic, progressive and, very often, anti-national suffocation of Brussels”while recalling that the flag “is inspired by the miraculous medal and the 12 stars of the crown of the Virgin Mary” And “it refers to what the European Union should be, above all,: the political framework of a civilization”. The elected official thus calls for “ do not use the wrong lever of protest”, judging that it is “one of the rare references to our civilization within the European institution”.

This Sunday, Christophe Barthès, mayor of Carcassonne, released a video showing him removing the European flag from the facade of the town hall, accompanied by the message: “European flags out at the town hall! Place for French flags. » The next day, his counterpart Bryan Masson, mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer, shared a photo of his town hall without a European flag.

Marine Le Pen defended these withdrawals: “In the European Constitution, there was the European flag, there was the anthem. It was rejected by referendum (2005, Editor’s note). Nothing currently foresees the deployment of the European flag on town halls. » MP Jean-Philippe Tanguy, for his part, denounced a flag “refused by referendum in 2005” and therefore “illegitimate in France”.
